The popular proverb "Too many cooks spoil the broth" has never assumed as much significance for a Telugu film as it did for Venkatesh's latest film Babu Bangaram. The film is a haphazard mess with an army of comedians and a mashed-up storyline. Director Maruthi had raised expectations after last year's delightful laughter-riot Bhale Bhale Mogadivoi (BBM). Unfortunately, he goes way off the mark with Babu Bangaram.
Like in BBM, where the lead protagonist has a problem of Mathi Marupu (memory loss), Babu Bangaram tells the story of a Jaali (sympathetic) cop, ACP Krishna (Venkatesh). Krishna inherits his sympathetic nature from his grandfather, and even though he's a po
Nostalgia is good when a filmmaker knows to cleverly weave it into a plot. Babu Bangaram celebrates 30 years of Venkatesh’s career and is a nod to some of his big hits, the obvious one being Bobbili Raja. The throwback to the 80s and 90s happens through an action-comedy that rides on a flimsy story.
In a brief opening episode we see an aged Venkatesh, looking as though he stepped out of the sets of Suryavamsam. A Good Samaritan, he breathes his last in the only hospital in the village after asking the only doctor to first attend to a pregnant woman. His grandson inherits this character trait of putting others before him and trying to make the world a better place

Venkatesh, who has been away for a while, is all set to come back with his film Babu Bangaram. The actor, whose success percentage is high compared to his contemporaries, feels that a sequel to his super hit movie Drushyam would be a good idea. He even suggested that it followed the pattern of the Taken series.
He also seems to have a concrete reason for the idea. “You can make a sequel to Drushyam in the style of the Hollywood film Taken. It can be more action-packed,” he says. The Taken series had given a big boost to actor Liam Neeson, who is now in his 60s.
On the rocky terrain of the poshest edge of the city at Film Nagar, enjoying the breeze, carefree about box office bearings and sipping some lemon tea is Venkatesh Daggubati aka Venky, the Peddhodu, clad in classic black Armani jacket looking like a stud with some stubble. With Ramana Maharishi books on his table and teachings on his television screen, he might come across as the Raghavendra from Sankranthi, but when he stands up and gives a firm handshake, he will remind us of DCP Ramchandra from Gharshana and when he starts to infuse some craziness into his words, your brain will stimulate to make you release that he is Gharshana + craziness + touchy = Babu Bangaram right now.

He’s also spent more time in the gym to bulk up. “I bulked up a bit, not like Rana and Prabhas. Those guys are playing warriors,” he laughs.
